In recent years the Rueda region has become the go-to area for white wine in Spain. It's easy to see why, as these crisp fruity whites are perfect on a hot day and combine well with a whole range of fish and seafood.
Rueda is located high on the plains of Castilla y León. The native Verdejo grapes gain great intensity of flavour from the brilliant sunny days, yet retain their acidity and freshness thanks to nights which cool off dramatically after sunset. Similar in some ways to Sauvignon Blanc, Rueda wines usually show a bit more elegance and subtlety, often finishing with an appealing grapefruity twist which makes them very moreish.
Beronia is a well-known brand, with its roots in the Rioja region. A few years ago the winery was snapped-up by González Byass, a large family business from the south of Spain. The Beronia brand has been expanded westwards to take advantage of the special conditions available in Rueda and this wine is a fantastic example of modern Spanish winemaking. Fresh and bright, the palate shows a veritable barrage of fruity flavours that are perhaps slightly more tropical than normal. Rueda at its delicious best!
