I love this kind of project! The winemaker here is moonlighting from his day job at a historic Rioja winery, making just a few barrels for fun. David González is orginally from the Arlanza area of Burgos in north central Spain. It's an area that has been growing wine a long time, but isn't really on the map. David and 3 of his friends have got together and rented a couple of special vineyards and are nursing these back to production, whilst making the wine in one of their garages. I visited in January 2015 and can testify that this really is a "Garage Wine".
The vineyards are high up, up to 1005m / 3300ft, which gives the grapes good colour and natural acidity. It's also a crazy field blend, which David says is traditional in the area - in this case Tempranillo, Mencía and Garnacha. This wine is made in tiny quantities and is really just for winelovers only. Leaner than neighbouring Ribera, the Tempranillo core has good freshness and the wine shows some interesting floral notes plus hints of liquorice and wild herbs.

Cult wine region where stupidly steep slopes mean it's all about passion rather than economics. Decanter Magazine's "Must-try red" shows a beguiling rose-like aroma, spicy red fruits and freshness, somewhat like a Pinot Noir.. This wine also was also listed first in the region in the New York Times. PLEASE...
Another stunning wine from the breathtaking Ribeira Sacra region, this one winning a Regional Trophy in Decanter Magazine. Juicy perfumed Mencía, aged for 12 months in new French oak. PLEASE NOTE THAT SPECIAL SHIPPING RATES APPLY TO ALCOHOLIC ITEMS.
Cerrado del Castillo is only made when the harvest achieves the maximum expression of the terroir and in addition has total balance. This only happens in exceptional years in wich the growing conditions were right for obtaining a harvest with perfect ripeness. It is a wine made from 35-year-old tempranillo...
Contino wines are masterful examples of Rioja, produced under the careful guidance of industry veteran Jesús Madrazo. Not the showiest wines in the region, the house style is modernised textbook Rioja, with a nice elegance and perfect balance.
