Fernando Remírez de Ganuza founded this winery in 1989 in Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa, after spending his whole life in the vineyard business. He now owns around 80 hectares, scattered around some of the best sites in north west Rioja. Right from the start his main focus has been on growing the best possible Rioja grapes.
But his passion and obsession go much further than this and with an eye for detail and an innovative mind, these days he could perhaps be considered the greatest modern evangelist for the gentle treatment of grapes. The idea being that any rough treatment can lead to bitter tannins from seeds or unwarranted extraction from the skins.
This focussed concentrated wine was matured 22 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels and is a tremendous expression of modern Rioja wine at its best.
